Khadira is a medium-sized tropical to subtropical tree, growing up to 15 meters in height. It features thorny and hairy branches, with feather-like bipinnate leaves consisting of 30–50 pairs of leaflets. The bark is dark greyish-brown, exfoliating in long narrow strips, while the heartwood is red and extremely durable, traditionally compared to human bones for its strength.
The tree blooms white to pale yellow flowers in cylindrical spikes during August and September, and produces flattened, oblong pods with a triangular beak between October and December. It thrives in well-drained, shallow to medium sandy soils and prefers dry, cool climates. It is found commonly in India, Asia, China, and North Africa, and is propagated through seeds or cuttings.
