Rudraksha is a special seed that comes from a large evergreen tree called Elaeocarpus ganitrus. These seeds have been used for thousands of years in Hinduism and Ayurveda for their spiritual and healing powers. In Sanskrit, ‘Rudraksha’ means “Eyes of Lord Shiva”. It is believed that Lord Shiva once opened his eyes after a deep meditation, and the tears that fell to the earth became Rudraksha trees.

Although many species of trees produce similar beads, the seeds from Elaeocarpus ganitrus are the most sacred and valuable. People often wear these beads in prayer chains (malas) for meditation, prayer, and good health.

Different Names

Rudraksha is called by different names in various Indian languages:

  • Hindi: Rudraki, Rudraksha

Other traditional names include Sivaksha, Haraksha, Sanwaksh, and Nilkanthaksha.

Where Does It Grow?

The Rudraksha tree naturally grows in the foothills of the Himalayas, along with other parts of India, Nepal, Indonesia, Southeast Asia, and New Guinea. The tree is fast-growing, evergreen, and strong.

The tree has:

  • White, fragrant flowers that bloom in April and May

  • Green fruits that ripen by August to October

  • Fruits covered in a blue outer skin when fully ripe — earning them the nickname "blueberry beads"

Its bark is light-colored and rough, while its leaves are shiny green on top and fibrous underneath.

Rudraksha beads are packed with natural chemicals like:
